Okay, disappointing - but not much of a shocker. Hopefully we can get one of the debates.
Not even that much of a disappointment. Kind of a "Well, damn, my lottery ticket didn't win" kind of thing.

In some ways a relief. The country is so unsettled, and even when it isn't those conventions can bring unwanted 'side events'. Let's hope we never host an economic summit, those are always so uneconomical.

To paraphrase a line from Robert Browning: "A city's grasp should exceed its reach."

That certainly was the case here.

Yeah Phoenix should step their game up and strive to be better.

This is very exciting. Of particular interest were Jonathan Austin's comments that if we get this, we'll be able to pursue things that we've wanted to for a while... mentioning both light rail and the arena.

We'll know at 4:00 am whether or not the games will be hosted here. I'm so excited. I may set my alarm for 4:00 am to catch the live broadcast online.

You can say what you want about the likelihood of these projects going through, but the exposure can't hurt anything.
Seems we made the list of finalists for a presidential debate, unlike our neighbors just to the north:

Who's bidding against Birmingham for a presidential debate? - Birmingham Business Journal

Quote:
Birmingham may have been passed over for the Democratic National Convention, but the Magic City still has itself in the running to host political power players from Washington.
The Commission on Presidential Debates on Wednesday released its list of cities that applied to host a presidential debate in 2016, providing a glimpse at the cities competing with Birmingham to land a coveted debate.
Huntsville, another Alabama metro vying for the political spotlight, has also spearheaded efforts to bring a GOP presidential debate to the city, however, the city was not on the commission's list. The price for the debate normally ranges from $1.5 million to $1.8 million.

Assuming the country is still here in four years and Trump and his buddy Putin haven't gotten us into a nuclear war with the rest of the world or Hillary hasn't leaked all our secrets out and the Chinese haven't made a run on all our banks and stolen all our ideas....Mayor Bell believes Birmingham has a shot at the next DNC

...or RNC.

Mayor Bell: Birmingham will seek the DNC again in 2020 | AL.com

Quote:
Birmingham might actually have a shot at the Democratic National Convention in 2020, Mayor William Bell told reporters Monday.
Bell intends to pitch Birmingham to be considered for the next round of conventions in four years, he told reporters after a ribbon cutting for Oxford Pharmaceuticals.

Bell also said he plans to pitch Birmingham to the RNC.
Perhaps he is hinting that some 5-star hotel projects are just around the corner.

Well, we've already secured the 2021 World Games, and I can only imagine the economic impact of back to back years of hosting the two major events. Hopefully, we'll land DNC this time around.
