New to Trussville/Birmingham, AL
My husband, son and I just moved to Trussville/Birmingham area two months ago. My husband is from North Alabama and myself from East, TN. We are very happy to be back South!
We have our house on the market in IL and are renting on the Trussville/Birmingham line. We are having trouble coming up with a plan for where to live and send our son to elementary school fall 2008. We are leaning towards renting in Liberty Park to take advantage of sending him to school there or renting in Trussville and finding a Private School. I have been told the Trussville City Schools are AWESOME, but at the same time the classrooms are over-crowded. My son learns better in a smaller student/teacher ratio, so that is why we most likely will not send him to the over-crowded classes if we can keep from it. Oh, and we may rent for a little while just to get a feel of B'ham so that we make a good decision on where to purchase our home.
Anyone have any advice for us on schools? I have looked up the NAIS Directory and found three private schools in B'ham that are accredited which are Highlands School, Advent Episcopal and The Altamont School.
Many thanks in advance for thoughts/ideas on this subject!

Mac:
The Vestavia Hills Schools are going to be better than Trussville, although the Trussville schools are certainly good...
I would give the nod to renting (or buying in Liberty Park or another part of Vestavia rather than Trussville. Vestavia is much much more convenient to the rest of the city, better restaurants etc.).
If you can afford at least $300K, you will likely find some bargains out there now to buy in Vestavia...

I would offer that there are some rental houses in Mountain Brook (We live in the Brookwood Forest elementary school district). While there are a number of great schools in the metro area (I've heard good things about Trussville, too, but they're coping with rapid growth), you would be hard pressed to find a better public school in the metro area than the MB school district.

I would look at Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Homewood, and Hoover public school systems.

Many thanks to you all for your responses!
I appreciate the info. everyone! We plan to go look around in the areas you suggested this weekend! Our main focus is finding the right area to live and school for our son. After we do that I will be asking more on "Hot Spots" for fun in Birmingham and how to get connected here and start networking and making friends in the area.
One question regarding the rental homes in Mt. Brook. Where is the best place to find out more about that? Should I just keep an eye in the newspaper or is there a Real Estate or Management Company I could contact?

I would probably buy or rent in Mountain Brook. I went to Mountain Brook Elementary (what seems like ages ago).
Bravo, I used to live in Shook Hill.
