Hi, I am visiting Birmingham for the first time and wanted to know where the more upscale shopping districts/neighborhoods are. Also any "artsy areas" too. Streets or areas would be very helpful. Thanks

Depends on what you're looking for. For standard upscale retail shopping of the ilk of Saks, there's the Summit.

For more boutique kind of places, then Mountain Brook Village, Crestline Village, or Homewood.

Interiors, furniture, galleries, etc., there's the Lakeview district around the Pepper Place

The Summit- HWY 280 S.E. - (main stream)

Soho (Homewood 18th So.)-18TH ST. SO.- ( Local specialty)

Mountain Brook Village- Cahaba & Montevallo Rd. - ( local specialty)

English Village- Cahaba & Country Club - (local specialty)

Crestline Village- Church & Euclid -(local specialty)

Cahaba Village- HWY 280 S.E. - (local specialty)

Five Points South Circle- 20TH ST. SO. - (artsy-local specialty)

Lakeview Design District- 2ND AVE. SO.- (artsy specialty)

Some of these locations have quite a number of nice shops. Others have just a few, but I have listed them because the shops that are special are worth encountering since they usually have no other location.
This is not to preclude other nice shops that can be found that are free standing businesses. But this should prove to lead you to the places that will interest you in both shopping and dining.
