Relocating To BHam Area 1/2008
New job in Hueytown, Professional Couple will be ISO a safe, affordable rental home, with a short commute to Hueytown area in March. (Jan -March he will be in corporate housing) Any suggestions on an area close to Hueytown, where the traffic will be tolerable?
We were pleasantly surprised with the areas we visited this weekend in Bham (Lakeshore area) Where would you live if you were new to the area? All suggestions will be appreciated.

If you have school aged kids, I suggest considering Hoover. It's about 10 miles away, but it's a really easy commute via 459, and the schools are better than those in Hueytown or Bessemer.
Good luck in your move.

I grew up in Hueytown. It was once a great place to live! Not so much anymore! We now live in a Historic Home in Bessemer and send our kids to Private School! If you were looking to buy, I would suggest the Westwind or Virginia Estates area or maybe the Rock Creek - Concord area for rentals!

Thank you for the information. We will definitely keep Concord in mind for rentals. We plan on renting until we're more familiar with the area, and I find employment when my contract ends here. Hopefully the job market there is as good as I've read about.
I looked at homes for sale in Hueytown online this morning, and most have been on the market for quite a while...kinda scary didn't know if it was the area, or due to the housing slump. Again I appreciate you taking time to reply.

This is excellent advice.....I wouldn't live in Hueytown. It was a very nice place 10 years ago but sliding down now. The commute from Hoover on 459 would be a breeze.

Thank You for your reply. When we stopped in Hueytown, I had a feeling that it might not be what we were looking for. We saw the sign for Hoover I wish we had checked it out. Our mission at the time was to find the Apt , and the best route to Hueytown.
This is a great Forum, I'm lucky that I accidently found it. Thanks again

By the way, here's one other thing.
You probably don't give a rip about college football, and that's okay. But when you get here, just PICK A TEAM. Auburn or Alabama. Because it's really important. Sure you can root for another team, but you still have to choose Auburn or Alabama. You don't have to put a bumper sticker on your car or scream like a madman or listen to sports radio. However, a lot of the social scene from August to December revolves around football, so you should be at least cognizant of the two teams. Just think of it as a manifestation of Southern culture.
By the way, Auburn represents the forces of Goodness and Light, while Alabama represents the forces of Evil and Darkness. Thanks for letting me clarify.

I gave up on football after Montana's underwear commercials and am doing just fine here. Yes, I may be lacking culture:>)

Dear friend, you are misguided. The University of Alabama is the oldest and flagship university of the state, with the colors of crimson and white, while Auburn is characterized by its "dark" blue and orange - a confused blend of color neither red nor yellow. Therefore UA is the Force, while AU is the also-ran.

To our out-of-state friend: You see how it goes!
