PortCity, SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUE owns the castle and several blocks around it. I think that determines what type of education they have in mind. Especially as they continue to be joint partners with UAB in major molecular level studies.
(they did plan to redevelop the property when they bought it, but to their credit they agreed not to demolish it when the city and community came forward)

That may be the case. I know they say they have development plans but I've never seen any renderings... So it seems like they haven't spent any money on it.

Turning that castle into an educational facility and not into some kind of hotel, restaurant, or possibly residence is a huge mistake. A testing center is about the most unsexy purpose for a really cool building.

Well, unless you have robotic bats swirling around the towers, with a couple of lightning flashes thrown in for dramatic effect. Then it would be like a mad scientist's laboratory, making it aces in my book.

Yes, and if SRI did not own it, gone it would most likely be by now.

And they did spend a considerable sum on it to stabilize and modernize the structure to make is functional for their purposes. There is one really good photo floating around here that was taken at the time the turrets were getting new roofs.

There we go. I mean, it all fits. Magic City. UAB Blazers. An iron immortal. Secret underground river.

...Quinlan "Learning Center" Castle.
