A pretty good arts scene, from the BMA to various art festivals and private galleries. You can pretty much find an opening or a showing every week.
More conservative than arty, but that's really a function of where you live in town. Southside/Forest Park is really where the creative class dwells in town.
Downtown is experiencing a nice Renaissance, with occupancy at 94%, along with a bevy of loft apartments. That being said, the restaurant/nightclub scene is taking time to catch up. Give it a year or two and it will. However, Birmingham's Southside is home to a bunch of top-notch restaurants, along with nightclubs and performing venues.
Best place to walk? Along Highland Avenue and Clairmont Avenue on Southside.
Economically, the city is enjoying a good dose of prosperity. Unemployment is the nation's lowest, with the country's highest percentage income gain over the past 25 years. However, Birmingham's growth is more steady than boom/bust. It's typically a 3-4% growth rate every year.
Parks and gardens? Aside from Vulcan, there's the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and a nice series of parks along Highland Avenue. At the same time, the city is about to embark on an ambitious parks program with the Railroad Park, Red Mountain Park, and a couple of others. Overall, the entire city is very attractive. We were totally surprised when we moved here.
