Default B'Ham People? I wanna know!

I just want to know what kinds of people live in B'ham proper? Are they artsy, or conservative? Does B'Ham have any public art? Any community involvement? Is the city and the downtown area good for walking? Which areas are safer for families to live? Is it expereincing an "up-turn", a "down-turn", or a just a "slow, steady decline"? Is it like Detroit, or Flint Michigan? Is it like Cleveland, or Cincinnati? Is there anything special about it at all besides that unusual Vulcan statue? Are there parks and gardens? Tell me more........!

Hi.

A pretty good arts scene, from the BMA to various art festivals and private galleries. You can pretty much find an opening or a showing every week.

More conservative than arty, but that's really a function of where you live in town. Southside/Forest Park is really where the creative class dwells in town.

Downtown is experiencing a nice Renaissance, with occupancy at 94%, along with a bevy of loft apartments. That being said, the restaurant/nightclub scene is taking time to catch up. Give it a year or two and it will. However, Birmingham's Southside is home to a bunch of top-notch restaurants, along with nightclubs and performing venues.

Best place to walk? Along Highland Avenue and Clairmont Avenue on Southside.

Economically, the city is enjoying a good dose of prosperity. Unemployment is the nation's lowest, with the country's highest percentage income gain over the past 25 years. However, Birmingham's growth is more steady than boom/bust. It's typically a 3-4% growth rate every year.

Parks and gardens? Aside from Vulcan, there's the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and a nice series of parks along Highland Avenue. At the same time, the city is about to embark on an ambitious parks program with the Railroad Park, Red Mountain Park, and a couple of others. Overall, the entire city is very attractive. We were totally surprised when we moved here.

It is Birmingham - not Detroit, nor Flint MI, nor Cleveland, nor Cincinnat!

Your questions aver very generic and have been brought up in the past. If you use search you will find quite a bit of information.

What brings you here, what are you looking for? That will make it easier to give you straight answers.
