Awesome to have you and your family here! I moved back here a few months ago, myself. The city tends to struggle due to the state government, but overall the city of Birmingham is highly progressive and Liberal.....just from what I've experienced living in other cities.

Reading this thread, Alabama sounds like a better choice that FL for a winter getaway.

I'm an independent liberal leaning. My wife is a moderate Christian. (Protestant) We were looking in FL. We haven't settled on a place yet.

I like U of A sports - Go Crimson Tide!!! My wife is interested in antiques, art, and history.

Antiques, art, and history? Yes, Alabama would probably be better for that. You'd also probably enjoy the terrain/scenery here, a bit more as well.

Justin - the more you say "progressive" and "Liberal", the less chance you have of getting elected Governor...

Birmingham has received quite a bit of acclaim for tourism over the past couple of years. Do a little searching online and you will see quite a bit of positive things and reasons to visit Birmingham.

IIRC you vote poorly... Policies enacted by your politicians ran you out of your last home...

I see myself more like John Kasich and/or Gary Johnson.
My wife is black, and I was raised in the less desirable areas
of Birmingham. This state isn't nearly as bad as a lot of others,
but why be content with the status quo when the potential to
be better is an option? I'm 25 at the moment so I can't even run
for at least five more years. I already have my policies laid out. I
add and subtract based upon the current environment of our state
government, etc. One of my plans call for a complete reconstructing
of our education system.....that's all I'll say on that.

Kasich seems like a nice guy. More like the moderate Republicans we once had. Actually, he is a nice guy. But he is ultra conservative.

For example, he is defunding planned parenthood, only permitting the teaching of abstinence in schools, when Ohio has a problem with teenage pregnancy that is out of control.
Sure, it would be best if teenagers didn't have sex. But the fact is, they do. Be realistic!

The jobs situation is not great here, for non college educated people. Call centers and fast food. Manufacturing is gone.

He's also letting the gas companies have their way with fracking. Sure, if might bring jobs, but at what price?

So yeah. He's polite. Nice man. But I don't agree with those things.
