Hi All,

I will be relocating to Birmingham from California in Mid May and I would like to get some advise on which area I should look for housing. I have heard that some areas are not safe. I will be working at University of Alabama, Birmingham and hence I will be interested in safe places near the university. Also, I like walking outside and hence please tell me how is it like walking during daytime or evening. Is is safe to walk even at the safest places in Birmingham?

Thanks

in general, yes it is safe to walk around UAB / downtown. just use common sense.

are you looking for a place close enough that you could walk to work from?

also, which part of UAB? it's a big campus, especially when you include the medical part.

Forest Park, Highland Park, Downtown, Southside, Crestwood are the areas you want to be in. All are close to UAB(some within blocks, some within 3 miles) and you will have no traffic to fight. All are safe, all are close to amenities and culture and all are booming with growth and development. All are filled with women, girls, old ladies, men, anyone, walking dogs, running, pushing strollers, etc. You will hear a certain subset of the population claim that "Birmingham is dangerous", but the vast majority of the crime is concentrated in certain areas of the city, mostly west of I-65. Whatever you do, do not get caught up in the "Birmingham is dangerous" mentality that old racists and bigots espouse. There are TONS of new apartments coming online near Regions Field, and all over Southside. See some here:

Having moved to Birmingham from Madison, WI and the beaches of Florida with kids in school I can tell you I am very picky about where I live. I LOVE BIRMINGHAM. What a cool surprise to love it so much. I will be honest when I say I can't wait for it to grow more, but it's a great place.

We live near Mt Laurel AL in zip code 35242 -- So much to do here. Check it out and inbox me if you want.

I have a husband who works out of the Mountain View CA office and works from home. We have two sons, one who is age 21 at the University of Alabama and the other is an honor student in the Shelby County public school system.

We're happy. We miss the beach but that is only about 3 1/2 hours away, just visited Destin last weekend.

Move here.
