Thanks folks! I'll check all this out when I'm out there in a few weeks. I'm weird in that if I love where I live, I won't mind a commute (used to commute in Dallas, Houston and Ft Lauderdale/Miami). If I hate where I live, it colors everything negatively for me. Plus based on what I do, I can target firms in a specific area and the chances of getting hired as a contractor are usually pretty good. My other option, being hired as a contractor, is part-time and then traffic won't matter. But it helps to know where the business clusters are.
My memories of Birmingham are from the 60s-70s and mainly confined to either zipping thru on the interstate from Huntsville to Mobile, or events at the convention center downtown. I suspect I'm in for a big surprise
