If someone visiting Birmingham for the first time only had time to see one thing in the city, what would you advise him/her to check out? This can be a venue, neighborhood, bar, street, park, etc.
My advice would be Barber Motorsports Park & Museum. It is a world class, beautiful race track, and features a museum with the largest collection of motorcycles in the world.

I think the Birmingham, England couple got a pretty good snapshot tour, including Barber's. Baron's game (season is over now, though) Zyp Bike Tour of downtown and Civil Rights district, stay at the Redmont, eat at Bottega's or somewhere along those lines. Visit Vulcan, RR, and/or Red Mountain parks - catch a concert at Iron City and/or festival at Sloss.

Barber is unique, for sure... but I'm not sure it gives a good glimpse into the City.

If it's one thing and one alone, I think it would have to be Vulcan... provides a literal and historical view of the City.

It is definitely a unique place that a lot of cities wish they had. The Alabama and Lyric theatres are two others that I would advise a tourist to check out.
