GotLuv4Ham loves to grill.

That said, what are the tips for grilling in Birmingham. i.e., where to buy meats, supplies, grilling tips and ideas, and where to get a Big Green Egg without a second mortgage!!

There are a lot of knock-off BGEs now, called Kamado style cookers. I have seen them at Costco, Academy Sports, Lowes and Home Depot for much cheaper than a BGE. There is nothing really special or proprietary about a BGE, but they do work well at retaining heat. I personally use a Weber Smoky Mountain for smoking and a Weber charcoal kettle or gas Genesis for grilling. It really depends on how much you want to spend and how much room you have at home. I like how I can easily transport my Weber Smoky Mountain with me, whereas the BGEs are several hundred pounds and not easy to transport.

For Boston butts (pork shoulder) I always look for the 100% natural ones w/ no added saltwater solution. Star Market and Piggly Wiggly usually have a greater selection than Publix or Kroger. Same goes for ribs...

I've made my own rubs in the past, but there are a ton of choices out there. Your best bet is to just play around with a few and see what you like best.
