I believe I just found the answer to our recycling problems! This link is to a recycling center in downtown B'ham that will take glass and most everything else as well. If your curbside service doesn't take all, maybe this is the answer to getting rid of it.

Alabama Environmental Council | Recycling Center I found this info in the free local publication called "Lipstick" but the link was not listed properly. (They had aeconline.com instead of .ws.

Happy upcoming Earth Day!

I live in Mt. Brook and recycle a full 55 gallon container every week. While they do provide the small green recycling bins, my family generates a huge amount of paper and plastic and I simply took a large plastic garbage container and wrote 'recycle' on it with a white spray paint can.

FWIW - our recycling collection is done by the same commercial firm that does our garbage collection. My collection day for both garbage and recycle is Friday.

Mike I too live in Mountain Brook area of town and find my neighborhood a never ending supply of recyclable material. Just this week a gathered 4 large TVs, a microwave and 2 fans.
I'm a stay home dad and have the time and love taking stuff apart.
I drive an aluminium trailer for one of the local churches and I can't tell you the thrill it gives me to see all the money people throw away.
I have large boxes full of copper, brass., aluminium, and scrap metal.
I take my stuff to Standard recycling. $2.90/ lb for copper. $1.05/lb for Brass. 73cents for Alum. And .07cents/ lb for any metal a magnet sticks too.
I'd love to know what you get for a pound of glass. I have a bunch of it that i'll just wind up chunking. It would be nice to make some fun money on my throw away glass products as well.
FYI, I've been to the East Birmingham dump many times with my home renovation. Wate Management just dumps their trucks and go. There is nothing sifted for recycling. Looking back, I can remember seeing $100 worth of electric motors computer screens and the like. All dumped and rolled flat by bulldozers and dirt. Its not worth their time to have $20 per hour guys picking through garbage.
I recycle for the greed of money, the environment is just a side effect.
Can't believe that guy would move across the counrty because he can't recycle a few lousey beer bottles. People like that scare me.

The Alabama Environmental Council site mentioned above is the most comprehensive place in Birmingham to drop off recyclables. They accept glass (which is hardly accepted anywhere else!), plastics #1 and #2, all mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel and tin cans, even electronics like old computers, printers, cell phones, ink cartridges (but no TVs!). The website has been changed to www.aeconline.org and they are a non-profit, so give them your support!!
