First off, not to be critical, but your question is kind of vague. In order to give a proper answer I'd need to know a few things such as where you are living now and what job you would be looking for in Birmingham. There are many good cost of living calculators online. Here is the link for one of them:
Cost of Living comparison calculator. That way you can compare the cost of living where you currently are to that of Birmingham. As far as the job market, recently the Birmingham metro area was said to have the lowest unemployment rate among metro areas with populations over 1 million. Now the good paying part isn't any different than anywhere else, your experience, qualifications, education, etc. will determine whether it is good paying. I will say this though. I know of many people around here of low to average intelligence around here that make great livings because of their hard work and determination. There are many affordable 2 year vocational programs around here whose graduates get good paying jobs in a number of industries. You just have to find out what interests you and do the research, prepare yourself, and go from there.
