best neighborhoods in birmingham that are...
near mountain brook and surrounding spots not too far from UAB medical?
Looking for a rental house and havent had much luck finding much even to look at, anyone have ideas?
Budget is $800-$1100, we need 2 br and a yard for dog in a safe neighborhood.
Thanks for the help, we are looking forward to moving to Birmingham!

You should probably look at Southside/Forest Park/Crestwood. Lots of medical residents and interns live in that area, chiefly because it is a quick drive to the hospital, very convenient, and has a nice, graceful lifestyle. Good luck!

Check out on Shades Crest Road in Hoover. There is a nice looking brick ranch that has a sign for rent. The drive into UAB wouldn't be too bad and I imagine it's at least two, probably a three bed with a yard. Don't know if it's fenced for the dog though. No idea on price either. I just drive by and think it looks like a nice rental.

Seeing a little misinformation here. DO NOT look in Southside. There are not that many resident and interns living there. Its primarily students and LOTS and LOTS of rental property with fairly poor quality citizenry. Crestwood is good, Forest Park may be a little too pricey but the best choice is Homewood for residents. Probably more residents and interns in Homewood than anywhere else. Crestwood would come in 2nd but you have to be careful just what areas of Crestwood you look in. One block may be great...3 blocks over you are in Woodlawn.

You're provided misinformation about the misinformation. We lived in Avondale, and there were interns everywhere. There were three on our block alone.
The problem with Homewood is that the price per square foot has spiraled upwards, even to the point that it's more expensive than Mountain Brook.

Misinformation in what way?
I dont consider Avondale in Southside. Avondale is contiguous to Crestwood and virtually the same neighborhood.
Homewood is more expensive than Mountain Brook in dollars per foot but its a huge step up in city services and amenities over Birmingham (Crestwood, Crestline Park, Avondale). There are homes available for rent in the 1000-1500 range which is not outside a residents budget. Its safe, the quality of neighbors is high and its 3 minutes over the mountain to UAB. Doesnt get much better than that for a resident and thats why there are so many in Homewood.

Southside stretches from Green Springs Avenue over to the end of Crestwood. All the aforementioned areas are neighborhoods within Southside.
That being said, we lived in Avondale for 16 years, and had excellent city services. The garbage was picked up on time. The recycling was picked up on time. The library was good. The police patrolled quite regularly. The streets were maintained. We never had the first hint of trouble. If it weren't for the terrible public schools, we would have stayed down there. And, like I said before, there were a lot of interns and residents in our neighborhood.
What's more, for the price of what you're paying to rent a house in Homewood, you could own one outright in Avondale/Crestwood/and parts of Forest Park. The houses turn sell quickly, and the quality of life is very high, especially if you prefer some diversity, not the usual homogenized suburban crowd. To be honest, Mountain Brook is okay, but it is really a boring bunch of people, and the day our youngest graduates, we're moving right back down to our old stomping grounds. Give me the quirky, fun-loving life of Southside to Homewood and Mountain Brook any day of the week.
