Interesting, apparently Birmingham is getting an expansion team in 2019?

is this one step down from MLS? Or is there a similar comparison?

It's right under MLS. It's equal to North American Soccer League (NASL). Hopefully by the time it's announced, they'll have a good venue to play in.

I feel like USL is closer to MLS than minor league baseball is to MLB. Not only that, but USL teams compete in the US Open Cup against MLS teams for title of the best in the US. So no this isn't MLS yet, but if good enough, they could play in the cup and beat the possible MLS cup winner.

The USL is just like other areas of the world that have more than one professional soccer (futbol) league. When your reach is almost 100 million households.....you're in the big leagues.

I'm convinced that the NBA could expand here and someone would say "Well, the Lakers didn't relocate to Birmingham, so this expansion doesn't count." Smh.

Great potential opportunity for Bham. Could present an interesting -- albeit far-fetched -- way to backdoor into a major sports league, if US Soccer decides to implement a relegation system amongst the professional leagues. Most other countries have relegation systems, and there has been chatter that a same or similar scheme may be put in place here.

Birmingham always draws well for soccer. That's why we keep getting World Cup qualifying matches for both women and men. Heck, for the women's qualifying match two years ago, I think Birmingham drew more than 35,000.

From my understanding, the USL also receives actual televised games. That's great. Perhaps one of the local news stations will be able to air all of the home games. That would be great! Although, I'm in Los Angeles.
