Simon: “The Carraway site will become a mixed-use development known as The Star at Uptown. We’re already at work now to clean up the site, and we are finalizing plans for what will remain in place and what will be torn down. You should begin seeing demolition later this year.

Unacceptable. If by that he means the later half this year, that's not good. The World Games are in July. You can't possible wait after that event to start demo'ing. No way. That's a gigantic eyesore just feet away from the site of the opening and closing ceremonies.

They was approved for rezoning and incentives back in Dec. 2020. I think the council and city need to approach Corporate Realty about the situation before it's too late.

I think the construction fencing around the site will likely neutralize any negative imagery. Plus big, fat posters proclaiming the coming development.

Mini...with due respect, but construction fences ain't going to do it. When has the last time you been over there. This isn't just an abandon building like the Brown-Marx. Our elected officials are really dropping the ball on this one. It's no way that property should still be standing present day. Even before Corporate Realty purchased it.

I would take it having a construction fence around it with a huge pile of rumble with bulldozers on top than it's currently condition. At least it would have people thinking "what's going on over there", instead of "my god, look at that place".

No, it isn't the best, but there is a lot of, "Look over here, not over there" appeal to Uptown and CityWalk that will help minimize the negative effect of the blight.

Well, here's an idea: Why don't we have a controlled demolition as the highlight of the Opening Ceremonies?

Either that or make it an event venue in the Games themselves. It's not too late to add Battle Bots or a Halo or CoD themed live fire contests... with remotely controlled drones of course.

this video from WVTM (starting at about the 1:15 mark) shows a little better which specific buildings are being demolished and which are being renovated:

New info about the project. Demo will now be all at once instead of in phases. According to Corporate Realty, sound like that have several leasing agreements in place that playing a factor into them wanting to speed up the process.

Such an up-front payment was necessary, Corporate Realty Chief Development Officer Brian Wolfe told the council, because developers had decided to demolish Carraway Hospital all at once instead of in phases, as initially planned.

“We had contemplated more of a phased approach to demolition over time,” he said. “We’d rather not do that for a lot of leasing reasons. We’d like to continue with momentum we’ve got on the leasing side and go ahead and take care of all the demolition at one time.”

With the approval of the funding, he said, demolition of the long-vacant complex would likely be completed by spring.
