Cottondale is a Tuscaloosa suburb...frankly, not a good choice. Pell City is a Birmingham suburb...might merit a look. About all I know about Woodstock is that its rural. Again, try a search as a start. All these places, as well as people moving to the area with one spouse working at Mercedes and the other spouse working in Birmingham, have come up in other threads.
You can "search this thread" at the upper right - the "Search" at the top is for the entire forum.

Welcome to City-Data

There is no requirement you do a search before posting however, doing a search can provide you with immediate information, which will then allow you ask pertinent questions about a particular area.

I believe Southlander was just trying to save you some time by suggesting you do a search before asking questions in order to narrow down an area first.

The good folks on the AL forums, do want to help you make a good decision.

Next questions!!!

Not all areas of Cottondale are bad. I own a 3 bed 2.5 bath home on an acre of land, and it's less than a mile from I20/59. Takes about 15 minutes to get to Mercedes. My house was rented to a wonderful caucasian family, but they've now purchased another home closer to their family. My former tenant often tells me that she wish she'd stayed in my house and bought it as she'd intended. Unfortunately, I am about to put it on the market because I'm in a position where I can't really afford to live there by myself, but if I could, I'd live there in a heartbeat.

My family all still live in Hueytown. I grew up in Hueytown, am a professional and hold an advanced degree. It is a bedroom community. I would still live in Hueytown but my job has taken me away. For an affordable, extremely family friendly, church going city, you can NOT get a better place to live. In Hueytown you will find a large annual Christmas parade, an evening Christmas Candlelight stroll with hot chocolate and Christmas carols - Citywide tree lighting/Santa Claus. High school has a citywide bonfire & Homecoming parade. Annual 10K, race club sanctioned event with over 300 participants from throughout the state and nation. Churches hold Halloween events for children and depending on the number of children in the neighborhood, they still go door to door to trick/treat. There are several new neighborhoods with beautiful homes along with other homes that are affordable with terrific neighbors. When you are sick or have a death in the family, people still cut your grass, bring dinners, offer to help. A new high school will be online by the end of 2009. If you truly want to know about Hueytown - contact the Hueytown Chamber of Commerce for reputable local Real Estate agents that will give you an honest view of Hueytown. Hoover/Bessemer/McCalls are not exactly the terrific places others want you to believe.

Default New to the area too!

Before we relocated my husband's HR person sent our information to a relocation expert (yes, they help in rental too). We are renting in Hoover, and I love it here. Anything you could want or need is a short drive away. I feel very safe here, and have nice friendly neighbors. Is there a possibility that an HR person could help you find someone to help in your search? I know that it took a lot of weight off my shoulders and they did settle us in a very safe area.
Good luck

Hi there,

I know this thread is old but I just wanted to leave a message to anyone else like me; I am a young female business owner and I moved to Alabama because my boyfriend has tech work here at the moment.
We moved into Kenley Way and I am so frustrated living here!
First off if you need internet from a good ISP you wont get it, you can only buy from DirectPath... something the leasing agent fails to tell you. They have an agreement with the provider and you cannot hire anyone else!
The people here are my age 25-35 and they are all snobs... Im from Canada! I smile.... say hello.... and I like to be a good neighbor....
The girls here look me up and down and get pissed off at me.... why?? really why??
One more thing... I thought I was renting a luxury apartment and the photos on the website are beautiful.... but Kenley Way is not a luxury apartment.... Not only did they hire a retard to paint they also hired him to build the cabinets. My apartment was disgusting and dirty when I moved in I was so upset and the leasing agent wouldnt do anything for me... I thought to my self you needed an extra week to clean and it still looks like this??? I could get a better "intercity" house in Canada.
My advice DON'T rent an apartment in Alabama rent a house...

For the original poster I was told by one of my boyfriends employees that Mountain Brook is a good place for people 45+, but then again he's a drug dealer.... apparently the Y generation in Alabama is missing a few of the good chromosomes... and it seems all young guys in Alabama are on drugs.

As I said in my previous post to you, 280 just isn't that great a place to live. I would really take a look around Southside/Mountain Brook/Forest Park. Those are great areas, and probably much more aligned to your sensibilities.

So you're condemning EVERY young man in Alabama on the basis of one "employee" who's a "drug dealer?"

No words.

Head scratch!!!

@@@You rented an apartment site unseen without asking about amenities such at internet:>)
@@@A friendly word goes a long way. Even "retards" are human.
@@@Your boyfriend employs known drug dealers? Unusual concept.
@@@I did not know that there are two Kenley Complexes in Birmingham - one for 25-35 and the one friends of mine live in.
@@@I am not up to speed on visa requirements for Canadians. Is there a cohabitating partner visa?

Honestly - your ranting is entertaining at best. If you are as abrasive in real live as you are here it will not be a pleasant stay for anyone involved - you, your boyfriend, the cashier at WholeFoods. Relax a bit. Get ridd of this "holier then thou" attitute. It is not easy. I know. It is live and let live. I have met my share of Canadians being short in the common sense and cromosome department:>)

Get you some rubber gloves and Lysol and clean house if that makes you happy. I do not think you will be any happier in Mountain Brook/Forest Park. It is not the location. What did you expect, what do you expect here? What do you do to keep busy?
