Honestly - your ranting is entertaining at best. If you are as abrasive in real live as you are here it will not be a pleasant stay for anyone involved - you, your boyfriend, the cashier at WholeFoods. Relax a bit. Get ridd of this "holier then thou" attitute. It is not easy. I know. It is live and let live. I have met my share of Canadians being short in the common sense and cromosome department:>)
Get you some rubber gloves and Lysol and clean house if that makes you happy. I do not think you will be any happier in Mountain Brook/Forest Park. It is not the location. What did you expect, what do you expect here? What do you do to keep busy?

Well, I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, but our experience moving here was the total opposite of what she described.
I mean, nobody pelted our car with eggs or shouted epithets at us. Perfect strangers struck up conversations with us in the grocery store. If we didn't know where something was in town, we would practically be bombarded with helpful, useful advice. We were still unpacking boxes when neighbors appeared with food and invitations to cookouts. After our first month here, we felt as if we had more friends than we did in the place we left.
That being said, I've seen a common thread among SOME transplants: Namely, they don't venture out to explore what is really a cool city, they don't have any curiosity about what makes Birminghamsters tick, they complain about how differently we do things here, and then they roll their eyes and tell themselves, "I can't believe I'm stuck in Birmingham, Alabama." Well, quite frankly, if you don't get out and meet the locals, if you don't explore the city, then you'd be unhappy anywhere you choose to live.

It will be the same everywhere as it is not Birmingham but "not the same as Canada".
We have a young lady in the neighborhood who came from Vancouver about two years ago. Every sentence was a comparison. A 90something Sizilian finally had enough - she asked her why she is still here when everything is sooo terrible. I have not heard a word from her since and kind of miss her.
Well!!! Where is my invitation for the next BBQ? I will bring homebaked bread and some great war stories about moving throughout the US.

Hahaha....I think our next party is in celebration of Talk Like A Pirate Day on September 19. I've been dying to do this for several years, and this year it falls on a Saturday.
