Default Moving to Jasper????

My husband recently got a job offer in Jasper and we are considering the move. It would be a big move for us so I am trying to get as much information on the area before we make a decision.
We have 4 children 4 yrs and under. Can anyone give me any information on this area? Crime, schools, housing mostly just general stuff to help us in making this decision.
Thank You.

Thanks any information will help. We don't know anything about the area except what we can find on the computer. I would just like for someone that knows the area to tell me a little about it. We live in West Virginia so it would be a huge move for us.

I think moving to Jasper from West Virginia would be not too bad of an adjustment....on a positive note, Jasper's schools are pretty well above average in the state and the community does have a fairly good commitment to education.

Jasper is a coal-mining town and always has been....there's not much there besides that. It has a good hospital and is on a new interstate highway that they are hoping will bring economic development.

Go and visit....this is what we always say. You've got to soak it in personally.

best,

bravo

Thanks, that is very helpful. I have learned alot about the area from this web site but it is hard to judge without talking to people who actually live there or are familiar with the area.

1) OK....it's hilly, as most of North Alabama is...

2) It's in Walker County with a population of 70,000 people.

Walker County, Alabama - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

3) It is part of the Birmingham Metro area: Population 1.2 million

4) You can reach Birmingham from Jasper in 35 minutes.

5) GreatSchools.net gave Walker High School an 8 out of 10....

Walker High School - Jasper, Alabama - AL - School overview

Once again, I would never, ever move anywhere without visiting there, getting a realtor and spending at least two days looking around. We are here to help you but most of us on CD - Alabama live in urban areas (there are some exceptions like Keeper)....therefore, I doubt we have an active contributor here who lives in Jasper.

That's about all I know....it used to be a coal mining town and now their economy is somewhat more diversified but I don't much more than that honestly....

Official Website of The City Of Jasper, Alabama

You may come down and love it or you may hate it....it's potluck without seeing it and with 4 kids, I'd leave them with Grandma for a few days over the summer and drive on down and get with a realtor.

Jasper, Alabama (AL) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders

There is a section there where you can see posts from here where Jasper was mentioned, but it doesn't mean there is a lot of info regarding Jasper the city.

I too would suggest you visit.

Smile Info on Jasper Alabama

Hi there--I live about 20 miles east of Jasper and I can tell you Jasper is a up and coming town in Walker County. I have been around the area for 30 years and it has grown tremendously. There is a new interstate system (I-22) now and it will bring new businesses to the area and the people are for the most part nice and friendly, the crime isn't too bad and from what I have been told, the schools are good(I live in Jefferson County), anyway, there are plenty of stores, a shopping mall, several good restaurants, etc...you and your husband need to come and take the tour..there is a couple of good hotels so come on down to Alabama. Oh by the way, if you do decide to move here..the mandatory colors to wear are crimson & white..ROLL TIDE ROLL. Have a good day.
