Some more info will help. Is work/job location an issue? Do you want to be closer to the beach or the mountains? Airport? etc.

Leeds is my fathers hometown. Most of my relatives on his side still live there. Leeds was originally called Cedar Grove but the name was changed to Leeds in honor of the industrial city in England in the 1870's. One reason for this is that Leeds Alabama is also an Industrial town. It was just out side of Birmingham, named for another English industrial city. The main industry there now is a cement plant which seems to be relatively clean these days. When I was growing up in the 60's and 70's and we'd go to visit my Grandmother there was a layer of cement dust coating everything. It's gone now, apparently their filtering is a lot better. There are also several metal fabrication type plants around but not as many as there used to be. Aside from the industry there are some beautiful areas. Oak mountain runs along the southern and eastern edge of town and the autumn colors are stunning this time of year. A short drive to the south in Shelby county will put you in some very scenic ridge and valley areas. As has been said most of the buildings and homes in Leeds are old. Just to the east in St. Clair county is Moody which is much newer and very suburban like with cookie cutter houses and shopping centers. Still all the best shopping and restaurants are a few miles away in Birmingham.

Could someone guide me on the cost of living in leeds? (including housing, utilities, and general house hold). I have got a job in Leeds, however, I would want guidance on the living affordability in Leeds. Would an income of 2000 pounds per month be enough for a family of four?

I am tired of people knocking Leeds. Leeds is a wonderful place to raise a family. We just got a state of the art Bass Pro Shop, we have our own school system with two brand new middle and HS, crime is low, its close to everything, the growth in Leeds will be tremendous......we are set to have a outlet center with over 1000 houses and a gated community. We have the Barber motor speedway and the people here are top-notch and down to earth.

I think that Alabaster will be good because of the great schools, low crime area, and a growing population. There is a new huge shopping center called Colonial Promenade Alabaster. It has a Wal-Mart, BestBuy, Lowe's, Target with groceries, and others!

I would agree with what gammasig1996 says. I have lived in other parts of Birmingham and now live in the Leeds/Moody area. I love it as a mother of 2 because I can work in Birmingham and still live in an area with a "small town feel" that is great for my kids. There are some great neighborhoods in Leeds and Moody that are very safe and friendly and feel a few extra steps removed from the rat race. The commute to B'ham is actually MUCH easier that when we lived south of B'ham in Pelham. My kids' daycare is wonderful, and we've enjoyed community sports leagues here. We are about to re-locate for my job, and I'm feeling sentimental about leaving our home here. You have to do your homework and find what's best for you, but I think this area is a great option for families.

Leeds is about to exp;ode with growth...The Bass Pros shop, and the River Grande gated community with over 1000 homes, mall/lake and a new hotel is breaking grounds and fyi there is several new residential neighborhoods in Leeds, so the people knocking Leeds haven't really been up there in awhile. We have two brand new schools...state of the art. So if u like easy living, affordable living and all the ammenities close by.....come visit.
