Birmingham winters are actually a bit colder than here in North Alabama (Florence, Huntsville, Decatur, Guntersville) because the city is at a higher elevation. B'ham might get an ice storm that shuts things down for days, whereas here we might get a half-inch of snow that melts. And hurricanes? This far north of the coast, we get rains (sometimes) from hurricanes...there might be some spin-off tornadoes, but mostly just rain. Except for Katrina...we got very little rain. Coldest spot in the state is usually on Lookout Mountain, in extreme northeast Alabama.

Growing season - we had lettuce through December and the first roses the last week of March. Tomatoes are in full bloom - no greenhouse.

I opted against Halloween on Easter and all I lost were a couple of zinias, some tips on chase trees.
