Hello all,

I am currently residing in Chicago where I have lived my entire life (31yrs), however I am so excited about the decision I have made to move to the Birmingham area next summer. I have a friend who lives in Montgomery, while nice to visit, I do not wish to reside there. My cousin attended UAB and when I drove her there, I was in love at second sight with B-ham. I have a 10yr old son and I really like the B-ham area. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about Homewood and it sounds like the ideal place to raise my son. I am leaving my entire family here in Chicago so I will be there alone and am looking for safe areas in which I don't have to have undesired worries. I am looking to just find some suggestions on which areas to begin visiting and look at so that I can make a decision as to where I want to relocate within the B-ham area. I am planning to visit every other month in order to find what suits me best, but am looking for some suggestions so that I am not just clueless.
Thanks

Well a regular here - cpg35223 - is also an ex-Chicagoan who has relocated to Birmingham and I am sure he will weigh in with plenty of help.

Homewood is a great, great place to live. Fantastic location, good schools, low crime...

First question...what is your housing budget???

Currently I am cancer abstractor or tumor registrar. However I am a RHIT(registered health information technician) and getting ready to sit for my CTR (certified tumor registrar exam). I work within the Health Information Management arena of health care and I love it. Some of the things I am looking for with this move are:

a) a job. (this will determine when I move. I know I am doing it backwards, but the desire is in my heart to leave Chicago and give my son a better environment and education, so as soon as I can find a job in my field, I am on the road to bham)
b) great schools. (middle schools)
c) safe & calm area. (I currently reside in the city of Chicago and I am so tired of the hustle and bustle of so many people. I am tired of the crime. I am tired of having to keep my son inside the house in order to keep him alive; diversity; With that, I still want some proximity to city life and not be in the country or rural areas)

Thanks. Again I am new to this so I appreciate your guidance

Oh. Well UAB is the ideal place for you. Incredible benefits, too.

I am keeping them on my search list as I am currently working for an NCCN hospital, in which UAB is also one. Can you give me the names of a couple area hospitals? Thank you

Brookwood Hospital and St. Vincents are the other two biggies. But UAB is pretty much ground zero for the cancer stuff.
