Default Farmer's market and CSA's (farm subscriptions)

A CSA, community supported agriculture, is when you buy into a subscription from a local farmer and you get a box of fruits/veggies each week of whats harvested.

Does anyone use a CSA? I belong to an organic one in my current home. Looking to replace it when we move to Hoover.

I looked online and found Grow Alabama, but a comment said they import produce from CA. The point is to get local produce.

IF I can't find a good CSA, I'll take a farmers market.

Any recommendations?

We tried Grow Alabama several years ago. At the time it was expensive and unreliable. That being said, it was in its infancy and may have worked out all the kinks.

The best farmer's market in the area I think is Andy's along Rocky Ridge Road.

It's in Vestavia. If you head south on 280 away from Birmingham, you pass the Water Works on your right. At the very next traffic light, you turn right onto Rocky Ridge Road.

After turning off 280, you go about 2 miles (maybe more) until you enter a small commercial district. At the traffic light, take a right and Andy's will be down the road 100 yards on your left. Can't miss it.

Birmingham has a number of farmers markets, according to the Alabama Farmers Market Authority Web page.
Here's a list for Jefferson County: Untitled Page
and for Shelby County: Untitled Page
And for the entire state, just click on a county: Farmers Market Authority
On the left, you can click on pages for roadside stands, U-pick farms, and more.
Happy eating!

Great post Southlander....and readers should know that there are many "privately-owned" fresh produce operations such as Murphree's in Cahaba Heights and Andy's in Vestavia that have top notch fresh produce as well...there is much available in our city....
