Smile Apartment Search in Birmingham

My fiance and I are relocating to Birmingham in November. We are seeking suggestions on safe areas to live in. We would like a gated apartment complex that is new, fairly new, few years old, or newly renovated. Can anyone provide suggestions on complexes and best areas to live in Birmingham? I've seen some on apartments.com and apartmentguide.com, but not knowing about the areas kind of slows things down. Also, does anyone know of any websites where we can find information about the different neighborhoods?

Thanks in advance!

I am relocating to Birmingham soon, also. I think this forum is a great place to start with finding out information about the neighborhoods. You should do a search -- there is a wealth of information already here. To get safety data about the different areas, you can contact the Jefferson County Sheriff's Dept. I also found a site yesterday called spotcrime.com that marks types of crimes and location for major cities, and it includes Birmingham.

There are also some gated communities in Homewood, which is a really fun area.
