the Summit on Highway 280 is the best for upscale shopping- there is a Saks- -restaurants- the best there is probably Fleming's steak house but Ocean and Highlands are more upscale down near Southside

The Summit is probably the most upscale, mainly because they have Saks there. Also, the Belk there carries clothing lines that other Belk stores don't traditionally carry. I still hate Belk, however.

Great restaurants?
Go to Yelp.com, and look up restaurants in Birmingham, AL. They have some great ones already identified with all the skinny you need.

My wife is counting the days. She actually has a Nordstrom's card that she got when we visited Seattle years ago.
Back to the OP.
How do you define upscale shopping? Do you mean a big honking mall, or really cool and unique boutiques?
As far as restaurants go, there are tons of superior, locally owned restaurants that are far superior to any chain. Most of them are concentrated in the Southside/Mountain Brook area, but there are some outliers. Really, you could go out to eat once a week in this town and never run out of different places to try. Our supper club's rules are 1) locally-owned and 2) must serve alcohol. We still haven't visited the same place twice after two years.

I was in Belk at the Summitt today. I have to say, I was impressed...they had St. John. Not that I can wear that size, but still, very impressive. Their costume jewelry still looks cheap and shoddy, though.

One of the things I like about living so close to New York is that I can go to the actual Ralph Lauren or Louis Vuitton store, as opposed to going to a department store.
