Wow, I knew the job situation got tougher here, but I didn't realize it was that bad. I guess half my friends are in an academic bubble, and the other half are lucky or not in hard hit industries. I do know that sales have gone down everywhere around here, and stores have closed, but the people I know have managed to avoid layoffs.
On the other hand, my hometown, which is #10 on the list and has always been a place of boom and bust, people I know have been laid off or nearly laid off.

I'm sorry, I have a hard time believing this list if Detroit is below LA. Perhaps, unemployed residents to monster.com ads isn't the most precise measure.
Of course, it always depends what your field is as well.
