Default Area hiking?

The wife and I are considering a hiking trip in the Southeast in March. We have open tickets to fly into Atlanta and wondered about the hiking in the areas between there and Birmingham. We're looking for wooded day hikes, up to 10-12 miles or so, no backpacking. What we'd like is to stay in one spot for a week and venture out during the days.

Any suggestions on hikes or where to stay? I'm going to post this in Huntsville forum as well.

Thanks.

Bankhead National Forest.

Oh, and don't forget Little River Canyon, the largest American canyon east of the Mississippi River.

You could try Dismal's Canyon too. They have gloworms.
