places to go in Bham
I have a friend coming into town and I wanted opinions as to where I should take her around Birmingham. I need ideas for restaurants and bars. I like the Blue Monkey so I know we will go there. I don't think I care to do anything in the suburbs, except maybe 280.

Pretty much anything in the Southside/Five Points area.
Dinner at Highlands, Hot & Hot, Bottega, Ocean, Little Savannah, Daniel George, Chez Fon Fon, or a half-dozen other cool places will be great if you're trying to impress her. Or, for more casual fare, there's Rojo, Silvertron, etc. etc. I think you should also take her to the Whistlestop Cafe in Irondale, which is what the movie was based on.
Blue Monkey is a pretty cool place. Then, right up the street is Zydeco. Or you can go to Workplay. Really, there are five zillion venues to go for music.
I would check Black & White's website or activeculture.info: arts and cultural events in Birmingham for more skinny on acts playing.
And you're right. Avoid the 'burbs. She can see that anywhere.

I would suggest Niki's West or The Bright Star in Bessemer (which is worth the drive out there).
I'm also a fan of John's City Diner downtown for casual dining, or Icon in the Tutwiler Hotel for a fine meal.
If your friend likes barbecue, you might want to take her to Dreamland in Southside. There are plenty of other good bbq places around. Jim n Nick's at Five Points is another of my favorites.
For Chinese, Mandarin House on Hwy 31 in Hoover, just off I-65, is easily the best in town. Surin, right next door to Jim n Nick's, isn't bad for Thai.
Other than special events, there isn't much else to do but eat. Unless you want to go to a park. Or the zoo. Birmingham's a decent place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit.

"I think you should also take her to the Whistlestop Cafe in Irondale, which is what the movie was based on. " It is called the Irondale Cafe. You can see the trains exit the yards from a viewing station out in front of the place.

Thanks for that. It's not sophisticated dining, but it's a little slice of heaven, not to mention history.

Johnny Ray's for BBQ
I'd also suggest Johnny Ray's for BBQ - not to mention the best pie I ever tried in Birmingham.
It's simple, no frills Southern-style cooking.
