A WORD OF CAUTION!!! Many public schools DO NOT PROVIDE SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION!!! This was an unexpected complication and changed our home search considerably.

As for Greatschools and other website, my feeling is that the school experience is very much a building by building, personal preference experience. I would go the the websites for the actual districts and the individual schools. The Alabama state department of education has excellent information about academic standards and school report cards that I found to balance the anecdotal information on Greatschools. You'll get an idea of the activities and services each school provides.

Welcome and good luck!

Shades Cahaba Elementary School in Homewood has won the National Award for charactaer education TWICE! Last year PTO magazine awarded our PTO as runner up for parental involvement (nationally). 13 of the teachers are AMSTI certified. Last year we built our certified outdoor classroom. Homewood schools are not just okay, in fact, they are better than vestavia. I personally knew a child who transferred to Homewood from Vestavia and spoke with the parents; they said she was behind and there was far more homework at Homewood. I also have two children at Shades Cahaba.
