moving to Birmingham
My boyfriend will be working in Lincoln. I've talk a woman people on the internet. She lives in Pell City and she told I needed to Riverside or city(whatever the name), because I was black. My boyfriend is white and our boys are just adorable. I need to know where to live in Birmingham and great schools. Everyone has assumption about the south, and I trying not to be one of them
thank you all

can I assume his positon is bringing him to the Honda plant?
Can you be specific on why you would like to be in Birmingham so we can help? We are transferees also we chose the Oxford/Anniston area. Hubby drives to Lincoln and the traffic is not bad at all coming from the east towards Lincoln, heading the other way from BHam to Lincoln is another story. Our friends live in Chelsea, outside of the city and it takes over 45 min for his drive to Lincoln. I would be happy to help if I can. We chose this area as it is a little more rural for the schools we wanted and has all the chain stores you need etc. If you need high end shopping or more to do you are only an hour from BHam and similar distance to Atlanta.
Good Luck

i would try to stay east of the city if the commute is going to be to lincoln. there are quite a few towns that have some desirable areas and that are really growing up with a lot of young familes moving in. you could look at pell city (pretty close to lincoln, about 25 minutes from birmingham). if you would prefer to be closer to birmingham, look at leeds and moody. there is a good bit of affordable new construction in these communities that are within about 15 minutes from the city of birmingham and not too too far from lincoln either.
if you would rather live in a rural setting, you could try the small communities of vandiver, sterrett, and dunnavant. these are sorta in the middle of nowhere, but are relatively short drives to both the I-20 and US-280 corridors, so there is something to be said for them as well.
i don't really know a whole lot about the schools in any of these areas though. what size home are you looking to get? are you looking to rent or buy? and about what is your budget?
answering these questions could really help us narrow down the pool of places to live.

For someone from out of the area, Pell City is the simple answer. The others are in the start of a growth cycle and better for speculators.

Honda has a great relo program. Several managers live in our area. Crazy commute but great golf :>)
Forget about the black/white issue. Be yourself. My question - as you are the girlfriend will Honda's relo apply to you and the kids or will you have to take care of everything?

rent in pell city until you learn the area and can find somewhere to buy. if you guys are going to be fairly well off and really want to live close to the city and have great schools and what not, then you could try hoover, vestavia hills, and mountain brook... but this will be a pretty long commute to lincoln and fairly expensive to live.
