Default Gifts from Alabama

Hi all. I'm looking for some gift ideas to give to a chef friend up north in new england. I would like for it to be food related and "southern".

I was hoping to go to the chilton county peach place and get some preserves, pecans, and such but they are closed.

any ideas?

Any good farm in the area that sells cool stuf to the public?

thanks.

eeyore

There is a place here in Arab that makes baskets with AL products, my daughter gave me one for my birthday last week.

It has coffee, kutzu jelly, apple crisp mix and chocolate shaped like a football.

There website it Bamabaskets.com You could see what else they use.

I would buy some Bob Gibson 'white' BBQ sauce. You don't find that anywhere else

Frank Stitt's cookbooks would be a great idea.

There is also some GREAT place, Miller's Cheese House, near Vincent that sells all kinds of home-made food. My wife and I only had one opportunity to go there, but left with about fifty bucks worth of stuff.

Hominy, the real stuff as opposed to Martha White.

Barbecue stuff, maybe a sampler of all the different ones. And Bob Gibson's in Decatur was named the best mail-order BBQ in the country by the Wall Street Journal.

There are a couple of wineries in near Childersburg. Haven't tried them, but some reasonably discerning friends have and liked them a lot.

Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. Alaga Syrup and a sack of pecans. Any pecan pie NOT made with Alaga Syrup is akin to a cannibal's snack.

Priester's Pecans in Fort Deposit has a great selection of homemade confections.

The best artisan goat cheese in the USA is made in Elkmont, Alabama. The Goat Festival is held up the road in Lewisburg TN each Fall.

Belle Chèvre Artisan Goat Cheese

Ditto to Frank Stitt's cookbooks.

BTW, I got a case of peaches from Chilton County last summer on the way to the beach - so tasty and fresh in season - and they make the best Peach Cobbler. Had to stop again on the way back...
