Couldn't buy beer in WalMart with daughter present
Yesterday my daughter (age 17) and I went to WalMart for our weekly trip. I spent over $250 on groceries, etc. I was buying an 18 pack of beer for hubby and a 6 pack for me - in addition to the full cart of groceries. The cashier said he had to see both mine and my daughter's i.d. Said it was a new law - - if anyone is purchasing alcohol and an underage person is accompanying that person, then both must be carded. I have never heard of this nor has anyone I've mentioned this to since it happened. Has anyone heard of this? When was this enacted? Is it just WalMart? I would hate that I couldn't get my child to help me with my grocery shopping just because me and my husband want to buy beer.

I would have asked to see a copy of the law!
There is no law!
However, did you know it is a law that the person selling you the beer has to be of age?
BTW, which Wal-Mart was it?

What? I've never heard of this. I shop with my kids and purchase wine and beer all the time.
Are they gonna ask babies for their ID too?

How stupid. Even if this was a law, what morons in your city think it would actually work? If you truly were buying beer for an underage person, why would you bring that person in line with you? Wouldn't you keep her in the car or have her go into a different line?

Never heard of that - I think although I dont' generally make a scene and ask for a manager I would have done it or perhaps even left all of my groceries there.

Over-zealous cashier I'd say. Should've asked for the manager.

I was at Walmart a few weeks ago with my daughter...I was purchasing a case of beer along with my groceries. The cashier did ask for my ID and if my daughter was also going to drink the beer...which we said no then and asked for her ID. My daughter is 23...but looks much younger...

I worked for Wal-Mart, though I try really hard to block it from my memory. This is a rule they have, but it is not one that is really enforced. I have seen cashiers ID senior citizens before. Only the extremely over zealous types would really make it a practice.

They checked the purchasers ID only or the purchaser's ID and the children with them?
