Default Advice: moving to Birmingham

Hello Everyone

I am thinking of moving to Birmingham area to attend school at UAB for my Masters. I am currently a graduating undergrad senior at Howard University in Washington, DC. but I am from Miami, Florida so I am very used to diversity but that it not the scope of question, My question pertains to the type of environment that in the area, how are the neighborhoods, which one should I avoid and which are preferable. The cost of real estate is comparable to that of Miami and DC are not even close, also how is the University of Alabama like ?
Thanks

UAB is a fantastic school and is nationally/world-renowned in many graduate departments. Obtained both my master's (Public Health) and medical degrees there. For in-state students, the quality of the education is a BARGAIN. The university has made great strides in the last 5 years to transform its campus into a more walkable one with scattered green spaces. The new rec center is incredible. Please note: UAB is a completely separate campus from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa (about an hour west of UAB).

Others can help you with neighborhoods and Birmingham specific questions.

UAB has been rated as one of the top Grad schools in the South. In some departments, it's ranked about Tulane and Emory.

I think Birmingham would be a great fit. The Southside of Birmingham, where UAB is located is a pretty safe part of town and has excellent night life. The college community is great.

Avoid places between the Birmingham CBD and Bessemer, those are where you'd find the more dangerous areas. Though, lately, the city has made great strides in cleaning those areas up.

If you're talking about the University of Alabama, which is in Tuscaloosa, (even if you're not, I'll talk about it). That is where I'm attending at the moment, and it has been an overall great experience. I cannot offer too much info about how UAB is, so I would just wait for someone else to post infor about that.

Good luck with your search!
