Housing Market in Birmingham Area
The price of a house for what you get seems considerably higher than other states I have lived (Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Mississippi). Any thoughts on this?

Are you basing that on price per square foot? Because I'll tell you, "price per square foot" doesn't mean a whole lot in the Birmingham area. The same 3/2 brick bungalow could range from $25K to $400K depending on which city and school district it sits in. Are you sure you're comparing apples to apples?

These are probably in the good schools districts. Right now, I live in Desoto County in Mississippi, which is the best school district in this area. It seems that you can get a 3000 square foot home on an acre or so in the $250,000 range. That does not seems the case in Birmingham surrounding areas.

You will not find that close in to Birmingham, we are a different market area then Desoto County, MS.
Here is where you can find comps to your 3,000 Sf home with about an acre or more in the $250K range:
Leeds - Built in 1960 on 6.8 Acres and about 2,140 SF
Moody - Built in 1986 on 0.95 Acres and about 3,242 SF
Montevello - Built in 1990 on 2.5 Acres and about 2,306 SF - May be out of your 40 min commute range
Calera - Built in 2008 on 1.02 Acres and about 2,195 SF
Hueytown - New Construction on 1 Acre and about 1,800 SF
McCalla (35111) built in 1993 on 3 Acrea SF unknown.

Schools are one reason, another is the relation of the area to the city, and shopping, among other things.
When will you be visiting the area?

You can also get a brand new 3000 square foot home that has four sides brick for less than $240,000 in Alabaster and Montevallo. It really does depend on where you are looking. Keep in mind that Alabama is one of the few states that does not list the sqare footage in their MLS (Multiple Listing Service) system.

Well the houses were very high before the stock market crashed. But you CAN find some buy now for houses if you don't have a house to sale. Some Real estate companies are trying to sell used homes for the same price as before the crash.
Many of these homes the asking price is higher than you can buy a brand new larger home. Look around you can probably find some buys.
