The heated pool may be the poster's bigger issue.

Racial prejudice? Is "Yankee" a race now?

True...don't Birmingham's excellent YMCA's have heated pools? Even the local privately-owned gym here in podunk Decatur has a heated pool. That might be his/her answer.

It is a long way to Decatur:>) I read the necessity along the line of "in-house" not public. As the poster has left the thread we will not know.

I'm convinced it I wasn't their relative that they would ignore me (I'm from the Yankee branch).
What is the truth about how native Birmingham folks feel about Yankees? In other words, how Southern is it there?

Just stay below the radar, don't tell people where you're from, try not to strive for success and you'll be fine. If you can make yourself like any other jar on the shelf and give more than your receive people will accept that. Don't tell any stories of your previous life or of things that you've found work well. If you do make news, good or bad, I think it would be best for you to quietly move on and start over.

I did not mean they should drive to Decatur to swim. Just that even small-city Decatur has an available heated pool; surely Birmingham offers them as well. The OP, wherever they are now, could always buy a house and add their own pool.

Because it's descriptive of the accent and, often, the attitude, especially toward Southerners. Witness:

Okay. My nomination for the Idiotic Post Of The Day. Seriously, seriously dumb. This guy has watched way too many episodes of In The Heat Of The Night, or perhaps lived in some backwater and made zero attempt to know the locals.

Southlander: Reread my post. I said "radical prejudice" not "racial." You're so eager to rebuttal that you aren't even reading the words of posts.
And I was raised in both the South and the North, so am well aware of the prejudice that can exist on both sides; although, in my opinion, the South is much more prejudiced towards Northerners than the Northerners are towards the Southerners. Just my experience.
And Yankees is not the way Northerners refer to themselves, but it is the way many Southerners refer to Northerners. I'm just quoting Southern friends and family with that reference. I know no Northern person who refers to themself as a Yankee.
