Yes they were--and, unfortunately, I experienced that over and over in 22 years there, doctorjef. The men were great overall, but the women--and let me emphasis this is only white women--often felt vastly superior to anyone not from Texas and reallly honey-child'ed it up for show. It was close to comical often.
As for accents, I have just a plain old Midwest accent, which is pretty nondescript. Remember that they want that accent for tv as it is...well..nonabrasive?
In Houston innercity, they sound just like I do, but the outlying areas of the city they have a decided accent. Amazingly, it wasn't the ones with the Southern accents that were obnoxious about not being from Texas usually.
However, you are really right that Northern women do come across as loud, because we ARE loud. And surely coarse compared to the average Southern woman, infinitely more aggressive and assertive, too. I really noticed the difference after 22 years and returning to Chicago. That was an eye-opener, and I understood how much I must have stood out when I got there. However, that doesn't excuse how rude the Southern women were (aren't they attempting to feign "I'm such a lady"?). It got really old, old, old watching some gal pretend she's Scarlett O'Hara.
Regardless, I stuck it out, got into their groove and toned it down and survived. I just don't want to go back at all. Been there and done that.
It's still a closed society, doctorjef, among Southern WHITE women, unfortunately. Luckily for me, there were lots of
nice Hispanic, Black and Yankee women still to be friends with...and, of course, certain broadminded Southern gals, too.
