I'm coming back to the south after spending the last 20 years living in big cold cities of the northeast, west and midwest. I'm more than happy about giving away my heavy duty winter coat.

I'm interested in learning a bit about living in downtown Birmingham. Particularly lofts and/or diverse, independent neighborhoods near downtown.

I'd like to live in an area that has some nice bars and restaurants to relax in after work. I prefer locally owned places versus chains, you know, the kind of place where everyone knows your name. Is there an area that's known as a place that UAB faculty live? If so, what area would you recommend that I look in?

Also, I'm a bit of a health nut. Is there a good downtown gym? Whole Foods or similar? Coffee bars, ect?

20 Years! If you have not been back in 20 years, your in for a shocker!

Homewood is a good place that seems to match what you are looking for. You looking to buy or rent?

There are several new places, like Hallman Hill Condos (Plan to open next month - July) This place is within walking distances to a lot of places you described. There are other places to live as well.

Good Luck and Welcome Back!

Thanks for the welcome. I am probably going to rent initially so I can reacquaint myself with the town. This will be my last stop for a while, so I will be looking long and hard to make sure that any ourchase is a place that I will want to live for a long time to come.

Thanks for the recommendations. Do you do rentals?

No I do not do rentals, but you can try Craigslist or AL.com. Also you can try AHI Properties, they do corporate rentals 800 505-9001

Whole Foods is right down the road on 280 about 7 miles from inner downtown-too far to walk. I would try Highland area. 5 points south sounds is a bit young but there are plenty of local places throughout the city area.
