Altamont and Indian Springs are undoubtedly the best private schools for the middle school and high schools. K-6? My choice would be the Highland School

Another private school: Redmont
Another option for Nursery aged to 8th Grade is The Redmont School in the Waldorf Tradition. It's in Crestwood which is a far haul, but people have driven there from VERBENA to get this education! Redmont's graduates go to Springs/Altamont for High School. They also go to other fine schools in the area, JCIB, ASFA, etc.
The Waldorf educational philosophy is really about creating great critical thinkers in an engaging and thoughtful way. You'll find they are a bit different in that children are perceived as whole beings with heads, hearts, and hands.....not just brains to be crammed full of stuff. It's very refreshing!
You can check out their website at theredmontschool.org or check out waldorf education at whywaldorfworks.org.

The Redmont School works for some, doesn't work for others, depending on the child's need for structure. We know quite a few parents who put their children into Waldorf and had to take them out after several years, only to find that their children were at least a couple of grades behind their contemporaries. My daughter had a Waldorf child transfer into her fourth grade class at another private school, and the poor child could not read at a 2nd Grade level, and could barely add and subtract. According to the mother, she kept voicing her concerns and got very airy, abstract answers, when it was apparent her child was falling behind.
Not saying that the Redmont School can't work. In fact, we know of a couple of cases where it has worked spectacularly. But it doesn't begin to be right for everybody.

I wondering why you insist on private schools. Alabama offers some excellent public schools - and some not so great, of course. But there are good public schools out there.
