Pelham up next for Aldi

Sunday, July 19, 2009 DAWN KENT
News staff writer

Since arriving in metro Birmingham more than two years ago, discount grocer Aldi has made itself at home across the region, expanding into new neighborhoods even as familiar shopping options fade.
The Batavia, Ill.-based retailer, known for a no-frills, utilitarian style that reflects its German roots, currently has five stores around the city and recently bought property for a sixth in Pelham, which will be its first Shelby County location.
Although the privately-held company doesn't release sales information, observers say its Birmingham area stores are a hit among shoppers, particularly the newest, which opened last month on Crestwood Boulevard.

I really wish we could get a location up north -- Gardendale. We need a Publix up here too, but that's on the books to happen within the next year or two.
