Hey. There's actually a ton going on here, whether music, theater, dance or the visual arts. Some arts organization did a survey and found that Birmingham was ranked among the top places for the arts among medium-sized cities.

Also, there's
activeculture.info - arts & culture information in Birmingham, Alabama, which has a huge calendar of events.
Some venues to consider: The Alys Stephens Center, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Civil Rights Institute, the Alabama Ballet (Which really gets great national press), the Alabama Symphony, Sloss Furnace, WorkPlay, Festival Theater, Red Mountain Theater Company, the Alabama Theater, Birmingham Opera, and a ton of organizations in the market.
In short, if you can't find something interesting to do in this area, you just aren't trying. Good luck!
PS: A lot will depend on when you visit. For it's pretty dead in the middle of August, what with people trying to squeeze in one last beach trip, get the kids off to school, etc. etc. Once you get to mid- to late-September, things start happening.
