Any area before Birmingham such as Pelham, or if you prefer to beat traffic in the morning, (I know someone will say "what traiffic" but, it is harsh), you should stay on the other side of Birmingham. I don't know if your route goes up (I have done both and bypassing Atlanta is shorter) 59, if so, Trussville is a good bet. Don't stay at a place in the city limits as it is loud and not so safe. There are many hotels/motels right off the interstate in Pelham and Trussville that will fit your criteria.

I think the Trussville area is your best bet. I-59 goes straight through downtown, which means lots of highrise hotels. That means you're best off either finding a place in either Bessemer (SW of town) or Trussville (NE of town). I would push through B'ham and stay in Trussville, about ten miles past downtown area.
