Travel to South Carolina
Hi All:
My wife and I will probably have to be traveling soon from Texas to South Carolina to attend a funeral. I am trying to figure out a way to do so without going through Atlanta, GA (last time through there was a nightmare). Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get from, say, Anniston, AL into GA while by-passing Atlanta. I selected a route from Anniston, AL to Covington, GA from an Atlas but this is for pre-planning purposes and we can certainly alter our route as long as we can by-pass Atlanta without going too far out of our way. Our final destination in SC, by the way, is Little River/Myrtle Beach. Many thanks in advance. We sure appreciate any assistance.

During the middle of the day, I-20 is fine. In fact, any route is probably fine after 9 a.m. and before 4 p.m.
However, if you're going to miss this window, I would say taking the southern half of 459 is the best way to go.

Realistically, you have to go through Atlanta or use the Perimeter. As has been said, timing is everything. We sailed through a couple of years ago at 1AM with a cargo trailer. Traffic was going 80 to 85.

You would have to go quite a bit out of the way to avoid Atlanta. I think it is better to just try to time things right. I lived in NC for a few years and did many road trips home -- through the dreaded ATL, so I completely empathize with you. I would recommend avoiding traveling through b/t 7am -~9:30am and 3pm- ~5:30pm, which are basically the rush hours.
