Default Fell in love with Homewood until I read the crime stats on this site...

Hello Y'all...that sounds so much nicer than Hey guys! I just visited friends who live in Hoover and spent 3 days driving around looking at different neighborhoods. I at first thought I wanted to live in Crestwood since that is where the school is that my children would attend, but after seeing how adjacent all the other mini-downtown areas are I liked the appeal of only needing to drive to school, and living my life by foot in Homewood. I looked at the stats page and was horrified by the difference in crime vs places like mountainbrook even though they pretty much touch, don't they? Infact all these little towns all seemed to come together (or did I just drive way to much?) My family currently lives in Suburban Detroit and I am of German decent and was excited to hear of the large german population. Does anyone have any input on this? Thanks in advance.

Well, hang on.

You need to realize that Homewood is really two cities: The area that you really like and the rat's nest of apartments along Valley Avenue. They are two utterly different things.

Why not check out Vestavia?

You shouldn't choose a place on stats like that. If the neighborhood feels good, then stay with it.
Everywhere has break-ins now and then.

Because Vestavia is just this sprawling, ill-organized place. Homewood has a human scale to the place, the difference between community planning in the 1920s and the 1960s.

Homewood is a GREAT town. I grew up there and my parents are still there. Never had an ounce of trouble. Like cpg35223 said, there are some bad pockets that you want to avoid, but that will be easily discernible once you start looking...as a rule of thumb, stay east of the Green Springs Hwy and South of Valley Avenue.

Thanks Chilitiger, I value the info. I am really looking for a place where we can walk out of the house and enjoy the community. We are not on the uppercrust scale financially and neat towns like that are expensive where we live now and I felt like Homewood wasnt so much about money as it was quality of everyday life...I hope my impressions are correct.

You say your children would attend school in Crestwood? I am assuming it is a private school then. If so, why not check out Forest Park or possibly even Highland Park depending on you budget? They are in Bham, but are very safe, nice communities. Lots of joggers, pets, etc.

Love that song! good luck with your decision. Usually...good public schools = fairly safe and family friendly area.

Homewood is not bad at all crime-wise in most areas. The only concern would be Green Springs/Valley Avenue area, which is low-income and definitely has more crime. If you are looking for an affordable place to live though, you will have to look hard in Homewood, as the nice parts of Homewood are now just as expensive as Mountain Brook (and you don't get as nice a community for your money either, so it really isn't worth it). I don't know how much you can spend or anything, but Homewood is not as affordable as it used to be. If you're looking in Homewood, try the Edgewood area, as Hollywood and similar neighborhoods are just as expensive and snobby (and not as nice) as Mountain Brook.
