There are specific models that tries to emulate the drive-ability of a BMW. For example, the first gen RDX tries to drive like an X3. I don't know how close they came, but I have a RDX it is quite sporty with the SH-AWD system and Turbo.
That changes nothing. I'm not betting on nearly three-decade old Beemer parts coming cheaply...
I remember my friend pricing plugs and wires for a v12 Mercedes, of 80s vintage, IIRC. $2400.
Nothing is cheap for a v12 and as I look through ebay, craigslist and BMW forums, there are tons of parts available for an e30 (the BMW I'm interested in).

My brother in law has a 2011 750 LI that he leases and his company pays for.
Before he trades it in next year for a new 2013 model he let me drive it for a day.
It has the V-12.
It is by far the fastest sedan I have ever driven as well as the largest.
The Rolls Royce Ghost shares the same platform and many components with this model.
It's cabin appointments are beyond anything that I can accurately describe in words concerning comfort and gadgetry.
The one thing I'm extremely pleased about not having is the expense of owning this car.
My brother in law says the scheduled maintenance every six months is sky high and thanks God the bill goes to his employer.
I was watching a YouTube vid on 'driving old Rolls Royces'. The narrator/expert said "In reality, maintaining an older Rolls Royce is no more expensive than maintaining a BMW or Mercedes."
Translated into Real World Speak, that statement would be, "Maintaining a BMW is as expensive as maintaining a Rolls Royce."
RRs are at least quiet and comfortable, which is more than I can say about old BMWs.

I love the e30's and can't wait to own one some day. But some of them are getting up close to 3 decades old and not many are left. There are a few out there in reasonable condition, but many of them I see really need a total restoration and most people are not willing to do that due to their value. The only ones climbing in value are the e30 M3's.

Agreed but that last part. Along with the M3, all 6-cyl e30s are going up. From the craigslist listings in my area, even the etas are commanding a premium of $3k+, including those that seem like they're not in reasonable condition.
I'm in California and many cars are retired due to the cost of passing SMOG.
California tests back to 1976 and I own a 76 BMW that runs and drives great. It does not pass SMOG so I have it in storage.
The same car a year older would be exempt and readily saleable.
