BMW will build a vast new plant in Mexico joining other European and even some Asian car makers plans for production in that country. Mexico apparently appeals to automakers on several fronts but tariff free access to the USA market and that the plants are out of the reach of autoworkers unions helps seal the deal.

Yeah well things have a way of changing sometimes. At one time nobody thought you could charge tax on Internet sales either

United States cannot make changes unilaterally that contravene NAFTA. No one in Washington D.C., Canada or Mexico is wanting to open up that can of worms again by revisiting NAFTA. You certainly won't hear anything about it from the Clintons even if or when HC becomes president.

Obama cannot even get two of the latest free trade bills wrapped up (Asian and EU) so he certainly isn't going to waste what little political capital there is for such things opening up a decades old agreement.

Do you think BMW will be able to maintain quality in Mexican plants, or does it make any difference?

You have to remember that German cars sell on the cache of Made In Germany label. BMW is a huge seller in China. You think if they built them in China it is going to have the same draw. I think not. A Mexican BMW? Ooook.

A number of BMW's and Mercedes are assembled in the USA. People just don't care anymore.

It's mostly the SUVs that are made in America, though.
