I am thinking of getting my wife this car... what do you think? Or do you suggest another car?

Fine car with very good record... I would love to have one... the only downside is high price.

That is a great car. Probably the best of the new diesels. Something like 450 lb-ft torque and 27 overall mpg.

Not so sure I agree that 27 mpg is good for a diesel.

Damn good fuel economy for a car that goes 0-60 in less than six seconds.

Sure a Jetta TDI can get 40 MPG, but it is close to Smart Car in acceleration.

I wouldn't go that far.

The Jetta TDI goes 0-60 in 8.4 seconds, while the Smart does it in 12.8 seconds. That is a HUGE difference, and not comparable whatsoever.

The 335d is not optimized for fuel economy only. Yet it still gets 36 highway mpg.

OK. The 06 TDI was slower.

The 335d is still impressive by any standard.

I think it's a good showcase car for diesel performance -- that is, to send a message that "diesel performance" is no longer an oxymoron -- but the price premium over a similarly performing 328i is about 8 grand (or for about 2 grand less you can get a 335i that will absolutely spank it.) The 335d will rot back into the earth long before you ever get that back in fuel savings, unless fuel hits $20 a gallon or something. If you have an aesthetic preference for diesel and you're willing to pay for it, the 335d is a nice machine.
