Just took a position that is relocating me to Boise from Indianapolis!!! I have been to Boise a couple of times and have always enjoyed the people and the city itself. I have a couple questions that I did not see covered in previous threads. My work location is close to Mountain View HS in Meridian but the wife and I were planning on renting an apartment at River Quarry Apartments in Boise for a year. This will allow us to learn the area better before we buy a house. My question is this a pretty easy commute or should I look closer? Take into consideration I grew up in Chicago, lived in Houston, Sacramento, DC, and currently live in Indy so I am used to traffic.
My only concern is we are used to living in a downtown atmosphere and we quite enjoy walking to all the local downtown restaurants and pubs. We are still young (29/25) so we enjoy the nightlife. I guess my other question is should we rent a place downtown or is River Quarry still close enough that it’s not a hassle to drive downtown. We are looking to spend no more than $1000 on rent..
Another question is does Boise have any neighborhoods that are similar to Lincoln Park(Chicago),Midtown(Houston), or Broad Ripple(Indy) that you might suggest to look for places at. I know Boise is alot smaller so they wont be as large but I am sure you get my point. We quite enjoy living in areas like this that allows us to shop, eat, dine, drink, and etc in one little area.
Thank you for any answers and I am thrilled about moving to Boise.

The commute to Meridian will be no problem, especially since you will be going against the flow of traffic. Boise doesn't really have anything like Lincoln Park ,but the closest fit will be the Northend. That'll put you a very short walk to Hyde Park (yep, Boise has a Hyde Park, too) and downtown. You may also be able to find a place downtown, but it'll probably either a dump or overpriced.
I would pass on the River Quarry and just find a place on Craigs List or the classifieds. Most of the big apartment complexes are more trouble than they're worth and I can't think of one that has a truely great location. $1,000/month is more than plenty for an apartment and you could also probably find a small house.
If you can stay in a hotel for a few days first, another option is to walk around the neighborhood and look for for rent signs as a lot of them are not advertised on-line.
We are so happy for you! Craigslist does provide a good assortment of rentals but beware of scammers and DO NOT pre-pay deposits (you probably already knew that). Just google Boise, ID rentals and you will find a huge assortment of informative sites.
Thank you for all the feeback!!! I am flying to Boise for a couple days the first week of December so I can drive around and have a better idea. Looking forward to this move
