Water softeners/filters? (Boise, Meridian: houses, live, shop)

Are water softeners or filters (or both) necessary in the Boise area? Is it only a few areas or just about everywhere? Some of the houses we are considering have their own well. Would that require a filter or is water from the ground pretty safe here?

I lived in Meridian and they were an absolute necessity, unless you enjoy that slippery feeling.
