Default Where are the Majority of the Transplants from/coming from?

Hi everyone?

I only recently started researching Boise ID. Just curious, but where are the majority of outsiders/transplants coming from when they move to Boise?

How well are the transplants fitting in?

If you moved to Boise ID from another state , where did you come from and how do you like Boise compared to where you came from? And why?

Thank you!!!

Here is a site that provides an XLS file of population growth and the state of previous residence:

Geographic Mobility/Migration (http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/state-to-state.html - broken link)

There is a site out there somewhere that gives similar data in a graphical representation of moves in / out at the county level. I'd have to really dig through old bookmarks to find it, though.

There was an article in the Statesman a couple of years ago that said the majority of transplants are from California, but the county that sent the most people up here was Maricopa County (Phoenix). I've met a lot of people from California up here and they all seem equally spread out from San Diego to Sacramento to San Francisco.

Bordering states, CA and AZ makes up the majority, althought there are people from everywhere. Definitely the most come from CA but I'm guessing that's just because so many people live in CA and it's relatively close.

From my experience, and what I've read on this forum, transplants often hang out with other transplants. Locals are friendly but not too welcoming into their social circle that they've had since birth. .

I've lived in a handful of western cities before I landed in Boise. It has it's pros and cons just like anywhere.

I'm sure some will disagree but this is my opinion, for what it's worth:

Pros: Nice size - has many of the amentities of a larger area but lacks the traffic and crime, good access to rec, moderate weather, low cost of living

Cons: Isolated, Idaho politics, brown and lack of trees, cliquish locals

A lot of people move here from the Seattle and Portland areas too. I have a French neighbor who moved his wife and children from Paris about 5 years ago and loves it here, his extended family visits once a year. I really think that if you move here from a huge city like NYC, or Paris, that you cannot expect Boise to have what those cities have, and appreciate Boise for what it offers its citizens and appreciate a lot of nature too. Boise has big city amenities but is a small city, but not of course comparable to what NYC offers.

Boise is pretty green over half of the year when the trees are in bloom and does have a dense canopy of trees and foilage, but one thing to remember is Boise is in a desert like many other western cities are, but Boise is a lush oasis with a lot of trees and water. I've been in Denver and Salt Lake several times and Boise seems much greener and treed from what I could tell. Also, I've lived in cities that are situated in a moister forested setting and I can honestly say Boise is green and full of trees. If you leave the city and head west then you are in irrigated, lush farmland during growing season, head north and you have forests which begin on top of the mountains over the city, head south or east and you are in the desert, which is green in spring, brownish/green during summer and fall and it is beautiful too, some people diss on the desert because imo they are closed minded and only like trees There is a lot of beauty and impressive canyonlands in the desert south of town, hardly anything to degrade. Boise is not very far from evergreen forests if that is what you like, just hop in your automobile and drive for 20 or 30 minutes and boom, ponderosa pines as far as the eye can see. A major point to remember is that even though there is desert in southern Idaho, the same as any other western state, that you are in Idaho which is the most forested of any inland western state, and Boise is at the base of thousands upon thousands of acres of evergreen forests.

In fact, right now the desert south and east of the city and the mountains above the city are a gorgeous shade of green, happens for several months each spring.

I know many people who have relocated here, none of them have ever said anything about cliques, they have fit right in.

Yes, Boise is called the City of Trees but that is only because the city's foliage is in direct contrast to the surrounding treeless landscape. Sacramento is also nicknamed the City of Trees, bfd.

The clique thing has been acknowledged by multiple posters (local and transplant). It may not happen to everyone but it's not an isolated experience.

Boise does have a lot of things going for it, but it has its cons like everywhere.

Boise has cliques. Many people are still close friends with people from elementary school. If you make friends in Boise they're probably friends for life. In LA you have a friend one minute and the next you don't. There are pros and cons to both.

If you read the threads in this forum, Boise is the greenest, friendliest city in the US, with the best job prospects, best cost of living, best recreation, lowest crime, safest, and most beautiful place in the United States. Moreover, the people that move here - mostly from California but also from within the state, Oregon and Washington - bring a positive, neighborly, civic minded common sense to the city and state.

I think it is important to stress, as another poster suggested, Boise is just like anywhere else. It has positives; it has negatives. The balance of these positives and negatives has to do with an individual's personality. You might love it; you might hate it. It really depends and no one on here can do much to make this decision any easier for you.

Thank you very much! Yet others & I who are considering Boise could use more detailed info as I heard the same in almost every forum regarding other states by using that friendly not always accurate search function. And a search function does not start a new thread/post. For example the when we were looking into New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada the locals said exactly what you wrote below. Best in this, that and everything. Recenly the New Hampshire board did also.
