Question for all you Boise people: Our family is trying to relocate from a suburb of Portland OR. We simply need more sun and dry weather. Also, some of us have awful sinus problems in the Spring, with molds and whenever it is damp or rainy, which is most of the time. In the last couple of years, I've developed arthritis and hurt whenever it is humid. We've visited Boise several times and really like it. How is Boise for allergy sufferers and arthritis sufferers?

As mentioned in other threads it really depends on what you are allergic to and what sets off your arthritis. Each person has their different quirks. If you haven't already done so, I strongly suggest going to see an allergy specialist to know exactly what you are allergic to which can help you narrow things down. I do know that when the weather turns cold in Boise that doesn't do good things to the folks with arthritis (my mom has it).

I am in NE NC right below the Virginia line and am considering a transfer to Boise. Big move so it will be thought out carefully. The Outer Banks to Boise. Still thinking about it.

Well Berkey, did you come visit our fair cities? Any comments? It's interesting to see how people see the area compared to how we see it.

Greetings,

When it comes down to it, what does your Instinct Say? Does it feel good?

For me, the Deciding Priorities for wanting to move to Boise are:

*Every time I looked into a different city I went back and forth between X and Boise...Did it without thinking about it. This was telling me something lol.

* A Big Factor for me iss Being in a Safe city, and that feels Welcoming, like Being at home...
The Boise Foothills are very warm and peaceful

*Jobs.
Wanted a Decent Economy at min. lol.
Right now sadly Boise's jobs situation isn't hot.
But they've got more jobs than we do, higher population in the Treasure Valley, and a lower Unemployment Rate.
Going to Risk this one and take a chance. I really think that it'll be worth it.

*Weather, think I'm gonna love it. Even in lots of pics I've seen when it was partly cloudy it was still Sunny. First time I saw one was shocked lol.
Winters here in Eugene really depresses me, which needs to be taken care of lol.

*Living & Traffic? Cost of Living- I want Cheap. No more of this food, taxes, Cost of living going up and up every year stuff. Paycheck used to go much further. Think it'll be worth it to take a cut in pay when moving there.
Traffic: Was hoping to get a city with less traffic than Eugene, but knew that was wishful thinking. So Compromised lol.

And then naturally everything else fell into place like how much people love living in Boise, outdoor activities, events, actually having an airport close by, etc.

Don't forget to check out Idaho's Ghost town

I'd caution you on overestimating this. In so many ways, Boise is entirely AWESOME!

HOWEVER, when it comes to employment the greater Boise area is VERY "networked" and as I say, you are either "in Boise, or your NOT in Boise". Meaning because of our relative geographic isolation, people know people, WELL, and there is not an expanse of cities and towns adjacent with great additional employment opportunitites. Having and making the connections can be difficult even for those of us who are natives and/or have lived here for years. And there's not a lot of movement between jobs now. Boise has a great history of low paying jobs and these days the wage offerings are even lower because of the glut of un-and underemployed people. At the moment I can think of 6 family members (2 are students) and friends who are either unemployed completely or have have been looking for well over a year for full-time, permanent work, preferably with benefits. Give it some more serious thought!

Thanks for info I know what you mean...My hometown was like that. And makes sense because there's no cities around Boise like there is here.
For finding work will be hard, and am expecting that. Already have a few ideas in mind...Hope one works...
Am keeping close eye on Boise, watching for companies hiring or laying off. Just Like the HP lay offs.
Really hope the kinda 2nd recession ends soon again, and that they don't go into a 3rd one lol.

If unemployment rate goes way up, I won't go. If it goes down or stays the same then I'm all there lol.

One more thing, the unemployment rate ONLY tracks those filing. The ACTUAL unemployment rate nationwide is higher than the reported rates indicate. All 6 of the people I mentioned are NOT being counted as none are eligible for benefits for various reasons.

All said, Good luck to you sounds like you have a great attitude!

Aww thank you. Am very excited and thankful to find such a beautiful place to live.
And you're right, the real rate is much higher, nationwide is probably closer to 24%. I really hope the plan works, because that means getting to stay in Idaho lol.
If you think of any other Need to know tips/info you can of please let me know? Hope you have a great day

Smile We Did It! Boise Here We Come

Howdy! It is me- Berkey6175! It has been so long(October 2011) that I forgot my pw stuff and had to register anew! After a few short times on the market over the past 4 years, we finally sold out home and will be heading to Boise this winter! We are excited and terrified! Our kiddos are older now and have some definite interests (12 and 7). Lacrosse, basketball, running and swimming are at the top of their lists along with meeting new friends, challenging/rewarding schools (Math and Science) and ready to enjoy the outdoors and BSU Broncos! Mom and Dad are also eager to find a good church and schools and the right neighborhood.

For schools I keep gravitating to SE Boise for public or drive them to parochial schools if we keep our house price in budget. Hubby has a job that allows us to be anywhere, just need to be within an hour of airport. And retirement from the Marine Corps will happen next year.

Interested to know if there are any new schools or neighborhoods on the horizon and if the Gifted program is difficult to get into in the public schools. Are schools overcrowded? We like our schools here and our boys have performed nicely, so we don't want to get them too off track with this move.

We will have an RV that we might stay in temporarily. I'm not as keen on that as hubby, mis, but it would be familiar to the boys and seem more like vacation while we look for our new home. I would prefer to rent while we look at homes, but we haven't been renters in 15 years, so not sure what to expect. Dream scenario is we move out there and find a place right away. Would be great to be in a new home by Christmas.

So that is my update. If you have any info on schools, neighborhoods, churches, sports (travel or do schools have teams), I would be ever grateful to hear any info.

Still in shock and yet so eager to come see Boise!! Oh, and I did finally make it out to Boise in Oct 2011. I looked mostly at Eagle and Meridian, both nice, just thinking we want to be in closer to Boise.

Thanks!
JMLCP15 aka berkey6175
